Peugeot-Citroen and Renault Say by Making Cars in France

In a move that reminds us a lot of what Fiat-Chrysler CEO, Sergio Marchionne told the Italian government not too long ago, both Renault and PSA Peugeot-Citroen executives told French parliamentary officials in separate appearances before the Senate that they can't make a profit from building cars in France. According to a report from Autonews Europe, the Renault Group was represented by chief operating officer Carlos Tavares, while PSA Peugeot-Citroen sent Denis Martin, executive vice president for industrial operations. Both automakers confirmed the comments.
Tavares told the French commissions that one of Renault's most popular models, the Clio, costs €1,300 (US$1,700) more to produce at the firm's Flins plant in France than in the company's factory in Bursa, Turkey.
The Renault official said that the discrepancy is even more noticeable now because of the price war in the small car segments, adding that the company remains profitable only because of its well-performing Dacia brand, which is based in Romania.
Martin's remarks were in the same line with the PSA official saying that the subcompact segment is unprofitable for the company in Western Europe and especially France, as the differences in manufacturing costs with other countries is "insurmountable".
Georges Dieng, a representative of Natixis Equity Research in Paris, told Autonews Europe that the French government is asking the two companies to "demonstrate economic patriotism". However, he added that French officials are not taking into consideration the fact that they have to remain competitive.
“French carmakers are not asking for a new round of financial help,” said Dieng, “but the freedom to properly restructure their domestic manufacturing footprint in order to maintain long-term viability.”

Renault Fluence ZE Concept is a statement of Renault's intention to produce a range of zeroemission vehicles that meet the needs of all types of customer. Renault Fluence ZE Concept is a genuine family car which demonstrates that attractive styling, comfort and space can go hand in hand with respect for the environment.

Renault Fluence ZE Concept is an all-electric car with a range of 160km. The battery can be charged using one of three methods: a standard charge (between four and eight hours), a quick charge (20 minutes) or an immediate solution (three minutes) in the form of the exclusive 'Quickdrop' rapid battery exchange system.

Electric Mobility with a passion
The styling cues of Renault Fluence ZE Concept combine the design language of motoring pleasure with the visual signature of Renault's range of electric vehicles.
Renault Fluence ZE Concept possesses dynamic lines, highlighted by a fluid character line which sweeps from the headlights to the rear shoulders. It is 4,820mm long, has a wide track of 1,672 mm, is wellproportioned and exudes status-enhancing, elegant looks.

Its identity as an electric vehicle is expressed through the graphic treatment of the cooling ducts, the fins of which are reminiscent of heat transfer surfaces, and this theme is echoed in different ways in the design of the headlights and motor cover. The photovoltaic cells located on the panoramic roof, dashboard and rear parcel shelf form a geometric grid pattern which has been carried over to the grille and seat upholstery.

Renault Fluence ZE Concept also clearly belongs to Renault's 'family' of electric vehicles thanks to:
* its Atmosphere Blue body colour,
* the specific luminous blue signature which features in the curved lower part of the body sides,
* the use of LEDs at the front and rear,
* the design of its headlights,
* the recess behind the logo on the bonnet.

The headlights convey the same impression of softness suggested by the vehicle's overall lines and colour. They are a high-tech feature, too: beneath the 'eyelids' formed by the indicators, the beams of the main headlights are precise and piercing, with the light focused into a single beam by means of a system of prisms.

The vehicle's status-enhancing credentials are further emphasised by the employment of chrome trimming for the belt-line and grille, as well as by its impressive 21-inch wheels. Blue polycarbonate hubcaps seem to slot into the aluminium wheels to create a spiral form which channels the airflow and improves aerodynamic performance.

Luxury
Renault Fluence ZE Concept's warmly welcoming and refined interior is based on a combination of flowing forms, the use of soft, supple materials and a mottled ambience. Passengers are comfortably seated in four enveloping seats robed in light leather upholstery. The feet rest on a light blue translucent gel mat, while the brake and accelerator pedals, too, are covered in gel for a greater sense of comfort. When the doors open, the courtesy lighting recalls the luminous blue signature of Renault's electric vehicle range.

The technology used for the dashboard is sophisticated and intuitive. A TFT (Thin Film Transistor) touchscreen displays multimedia information and essential journey-related information such as the navigation function and the location of the nearest 'Quickdrop' station. The display also provides data specific to electric vehicles, such as range optimization information, for example.

The centre console incorporates two floating armrests and forms a fluid, rearward-flowing arc. At the front, the integrated central front armrest includes the stop/start button, the air-conditioning and volume controls, as well as the new touchscreen Samsung Jet phone. This phone comes with a hands-free function, and also enables occupants to listen to music or enjoy a film on the screens which have been built into the front seatbacks. The central rear armrest incorporates the climate control and volume controls, plus another Samsung Jet telephone and two remote controls for the two screens.

Renault Fluence ZE Concept is not respectful of the environment simply because it runs on electricity. Indeed, the entire car has been thought through to optimize energy use:

* the photovoltaic cells meet part of the car's energy requirements with a view to complementing the power supplied by the battery,
* the headlights use high-performance electroluminescent diodes which deliver an excellent trade-off between efficiency and energy consumption,
* the triple-zone climate control system allows occupants to achieve just the right settings for the two seats at the front and at the rear. The air vents also feature a dynamic lighting code, with blue representing the passage of cold air and red representing warm air,
* the car's aerodynamics have been meticulously honed to minimize drag, including streamlined rear-view mirrors with integrated rearward facing cameras, a completely enclosed underside incorporating a diffuser at the rear, and spiral-form wheel rims,
* Renault Fluence ZE Concept runs on low rolling resistance Michelin tyres.

Renault Fluence ZE Concept is powered exclusively by an electric motor located near the front axle, in conjunction with a lithium-ion battery positioned between the rear seats and the boot. Renault's designers and engineers worked closely together to develop a safe, practical vehicle capable of accommodating a large enough battery to ensure good range (160km), while also providing sufficient carrying capacity to cater for the requirements of an active family (327dm3).

3 Battery ( Charging Techniques )
The driver has three options when it comes to 'filling up' on energy:

* A standard charge: takes between four and eight hours, via a charging socket situated on the outside of the vehicle.
* A quick charge: in 20 minutes, using the same socket at specific charging points.
* The exclusive 'Quickdrop' system: three minutes at a rapid battery exchange station.

Renault Fluence ZE Concept provides a foretaste of the forthcoming electric version of Renault Fluence, and represents a solution to zero-emission motoring in the world of tomorrow.

Renault Clio Campus continues its European career with this month's launch of the very latest version of the model. Since 2005, it has sat alongside new Renault Clio in the range and sold in 22 countries, winning over almost 400,000 customers in Europe alone. In 2008, Renault Clio Campus' leading markets were France (40%), Italy (12%), Algeria (8%), Germany (7%) and Spain (6%).

New front-end styling
Renault Clio Campus features a new visual identity, with Renault's design team building on the original design which has proved so popular with customers to give it a more modern and more dynamic feel. The redesigned front bumper and grille have been redesigned. The trihedral panel behind the logo has been dropped and the bottom air intake has been modified to highlight the front end's personality. The juxtaposition of curves and horizontal lines adds a distinctly elegant note, while the foglamps are now incorporated in the bumper and crystal headlamp masks have been added. The decorative black B-pillar trimming gives a more harmonious, flowing aspect to the sweep of the side windows.

Renault Clio Campus is equipped with new flatblade-type windscreen-wipers, and the bigger exterior mirrors not only minimize blind spots but also comply with current rear view legislation. Dynamique versions come with body-colour exterior door handles, exterior mirrors and rear hatch trim, with 15-inch Alyum aluminium alloy wheels and metallic paint available as options.

Sportier upholstery
New cloth upholstery with a black and silver interwoven pattern has been introduced for the most extensively-equipped level's sporty bucket seats. The lateral air-vents, speedometer, rev-counter, gearlever, handbrake and interior door handles are picked out in satin-finish chrome paint, while the instrument needles are red.

Two petrol engines, two diesel engines and one LPG engine (depending on markets)
The Renault Clio Campus range includes a line-up of small capacity engines which all deliver responsive performance and fuel efficiency.
Two petrol engines (1.2 60 and 1.2 16V 75) : responsive performance, economical to buy and run.

Two diesel engines: the dCi 65 and the dCi 85 both emit less than 120g of CO2/km (115g/km and 111g/km respectively).

An LPG version of the 1.2 60 engine is also available. LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is clean and economical, and produces less polluting emissions than a petrol engine, while its CO2 emissions are similar to those of a diesel powerplant (126 g/km). This quiet engine runs on either petrol or LPG, allowing the driver to switch freely from one mode to the other at any time. Its total range is consequently even longer, and a light on the dashboard tells the driver which type of fuel is being used at any given moment.

An economical, ecologically friendly vehicle
All the different versions of new Renault Clio Campus comply with the three criteria required to qualify for the Renault eco² signature. The two dCi versions are eligible for the French state's eco-bonus of €700, while the LPG version qualifies for the special €2,000 eco-bonus.

Clio Campus sits between Renault Twingo (length: 3.60m) and Renault Clio III (4.03m) in the Renault line-up and stands out as the range's most compact five-door hatchback.

The engines which have been selected for the range, along with its small size and contained weight, ensure that Renault Clio Campus is particularly fuel efficient. Thanks to the fitment of 14-inch tyres and widely-spaced servicing intervals (every two years/30,000km for petrol versions, or every year/30,000km for diesel versions), maintenance costs are very affordable.

Renault Clio II became the first vehicle to secure a four-star EuroNCAP crash test rating in 2001, proof that the platform on which it is based has active and passive safety built in to its DNA. The 2009 Geneva Motor Show sees Renault take the wraps off the latest hatchback and estate versions of the best-selling Renault Clio. New Renault Clio's styling, comfort, versatility, safety credentials and equipment, which form a package worthy of that of models from the next segment up, are sure to appeal to a large, loyal customer base worldwide. At the same time, its extremely rigorous build quality makes it one of the most reliable cars of its class.

New Renault Clio GT, a more purposeful personality
Styling: New Renault Clio GT can be recognized by its exclusive Malta Blue body colour and expressive, racy lines. It sits squarely on its 16-inch "Dark Anthracite" aluminium alloy wheels, while its more assertive front end features a gloss black grille and distinctive black headlamp masks. The lines of the sills point to the performance of the GT version's specific suspension.

Suspension:
Renault Sport Technologies' engineers have paid special attention to ensure that New Renault Clio GT's chassis combines first class dynamic ability with a comfortable ride. The stiffness of the front springs and the calibration of the front dampers have been uprated by 15 per cent compared to the previous version. The variable-rate coil springs at the rear are 15 per cent stiffer, too, and the new rear dampers feature bigger diameter rods. These solutions ensure enhanced control of body movement and more precise cornering without detracting from comfort.

Benchmark cabin space and comfort
New Renault Clio boasts a class-leading overall cabin space index, with rear shoudler-room of 1,362mm in the case of three-door versions and 1,343mm for five-door and estate versions. The sensation of space is further accentuated by the generous headroom which is 866mm at the rear, while rear occupants benefit from kneeroom of 162mm, too. Indeed, New Renault Clio comfortably sits passengers who are more than 1.88m tall (95th percentile of the European population).

Grand tourer quality acoustic performance
New Renault Clio claims soundproofing performance from the next segment up. Its architecture has been carefully engineered to filter out engine and transmission-generated noise, as well as road noise.

Responsive, environmentally-friendly engines
The range of engines and transmissions has been carefully selected to bring out the best in New Renault Clio's dynamic performance.

The petrol line-up comprises five powerplants (depending on market): the 1.2 16V 75hp (55kW), the TCe 100 (74kW), the 1.6 16V 110hp (82kW), the 1.6 16V 128hp (94kW) and the 2.0 16V 140hp (102kW). An E85 bioethanol-compatible version of the 1.2 16V 75hp is also available. Modifications have been made to enable this engine, which is based on an existing block from the range, to adapt automatically to this type of fuel. The most notable changes concern the fuel tank, fuel system, injection system and combustion chambers.

A raft of equipment from the next segment up
The New Renault Clio range includes a long list of equipment from the next segment up aimed at either facilitating driving or enhancing travelling comfort. New Renault Clio is the only B-segment model that can be ordered with a hands-free card. To unlock the car, the driver only has to put a hand near one of the door handles, or else activate the boot opening mechanism. The doors automatically lock at the push of a button situated on the driver's door. A remote lighting function enables owners to locate their vehicle at a distance thanks a bespoke button on the card which activates the lights. For hands-free starting, the card doesn't need to be inserted into a slot; its mere presence inside the cabin suffices thanks to special antennae.

New Renault Clio comes with the new 80W RadioSat Classic audio system which includes six loudspeakers, an MP3-compatbile CD player, the display of MP3 file names and an RCA socket situated in front of the gear lever.

The combination of New Renault Clio's suspension and a range of driver aids (ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution, emergency brake assist, ESC, traction control, engine torque overrun regulation) ensures an outstanding level of active safety.

The Renault has chosen the Geneva Motor Show to take the wraps off its Mégane Coupé Concept show car which foreshadows a compact production coupe to be released at a later date. Like New Laguna, it points to an evolution towards more fluid, sportier styling from Renault. Renault Mégane Coupé Concept targets drivers who are not only drawn by the notion of driving pleasure but who also seek to express their personality through their vehicle. Mégane Coupé Concept symbolizes Renault's vision of what a genuine compact sports coupe should deliver, namely character and dynamism, two traits epitomized by the show car's unprecedented door-opening kinematics.

Distinctive looks that exude personality and dynamism
The Renault Mégane Coupé Concept provides a foretaste of the forthcoming Mégane Coupe. "This show car emphatically showcases the evolution at Renault Design. Its squatter proportions and powerful, energetic styling talk directly to the driver's senses; they say 'driving pleasure'.

The four independent tubes that make up the modern rear lights are housed in the bodywork and serve as a further illustration of the dynamic, technological spirit behind Renault Mégane Coupé Concept. Day or night, they form a highly distinctive signature.

The boot, which pulls open and then lifts to minimize vertical travel, echoes the kinematics of the doors which are divided into two sections. The panelled door itself is topped by a separate glazed area and, as they open, the two parts deploy gracefully and elegantly in an independent movement redolent of dragonfly wings. A carbon arm at the rear of the doors connects them to the body structure and the system ensures particularly easy access for passengers.

The cabin:
a compelling extension of the exterior's dynamic voluptuousness.
The interior is redolent of the world of contemporary furniture. The independent, asymmetric front seats, which rise up from the sills, seem to float in midair. Their wafer-like forms express an airy lightness, while their enveloping design is a pledge of comfort and holds the occupants firmly in place. The aperture revealed by the open doors carries over to the front seat shells and the upper part of the two rear seats.

The futuristic, ethereal dashboard features expressive, flowing lines and can be divided into two distinct sections: the red lacquered main structure and black nubuck inserts which can hold small items. This embedded zone houses the sophisticated instrumentation which takes its inspiration from aviator-style watches, including a speedometer which displays the speed in analogue form on the periphery and in digital form in the centre, plus an analogue rev-counter. Both feature black metallic backgrounds with white graphics and red back lighting.

The cabin equipment is modern and intuitive
The different controls have been inspired by the Renault-pioneered Touch Design approach and are both simple and practical.
The four-zone climate control system allows each passenger to select the temperature they prefer using controls housed either side of the dashboard in the case of the front passengers or on the front seat backs for rear occupants.

A show car dedicated to passion and driving pleasure
Renault Mégane Coupé Concept's generous bumper, wide, low grille and alveolar air-intake point to the presence of a high-performance power plant under the bonnet.
